What's a wind inspection and why should I get one?

I have often asked this questions myself. During one of my last home inspection that I accompanied my buyer on the home inspector gave me the run down on what a wind inspection entails and how it can save you some money on your home owners insurance policy.

The reason you get a discount is because back in 2002 Florida came out with a ruling that stated insurers had to give discounts or credits for properties that reduce damage and loss in hurricanes and windstorms. Make sense to me.

So what does a wind inspection include and how do you get one? It's an inspection of the following 8 items:

1. Roof Covering

2. Roof Deck Attachment

3. Roof to Wall Attachment

4. Roof Geometry

5. Gable End Bracing

6. Wall Construction Type

7. Secondary Water Barrier

8. Door and Window Protection

All you have to do is add a wind inspection or your next home inspection and save upwards of $300+ a year on your home owners insurance.

Wow - that photo was rather impressive!  To have winds that strong must be concerning at times.  Here in Santa Fe we are in a large valley surround by four mountain ranges so we have 4 full season and all of them moderate.

Honestly Orlando is pretty docile except for our summer rain and lighting storms we rarely ever get hit by hurricanes. Except the 3 in 2004. We sit in a small bowl ourselves but you wouldnt know it looking at our terrain :)

I had heard of wind inspections before, but I forgot about them. Thanks for the reminder. Who would be a person to talk to about getting one? Let's just hope our recent good luck with hurricanes holds out. Hurricanes are exciting, but who really needs them? The novelty wore off pretty fast in 2004.

Heather - I always advise my buyers to get a wind inspection done at the same time as a home inspection. It adds $100 to the cost and as you say. it saves $300 at least.
